Miss America Organization Partners with EarthEra® To Green 2010 Pageant

Las Vegas, NV -- January 29, 2010 – The Miss America Organization and EarthEra today announced a new partnership to reduce the carbon footprint of the 2010 Miss America Pageant, taking place this Saturday, January 30, in Las Vegas, NV.  Through the partnership, EarthEra will supply Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to match the electricity consumption during the Miss America Pageant including all attendee hotel rooms.

EarthEra will also calculate and offset the personal carbon footprint of the newly crowned Miss America during her promotional travels in 2010. EarthEra was created by NextEra Energy Resources, North America’s largest producer of wind and solar power. The innovative program helps organizations and consumers reduce their carbon footprint and then uses 100 percent of the revenue received to build new renewable energy facilities in the United States.

“We are excited to partner with NextEra Energy Resources through their innovative EarthEra program” said Art McMaster, President and CEO of the Miss America Organization.   “This partnership gives us an opportunity to help reduce the carbon footprint of our event and promote one of the most important and socially relevant causes that will face future generations. We are happy to play a part in protecting our planet and educating tomorrow’s leaders.”

“The Miss America Organization has always been about helping to build brighter futures for young people, and EarthEra is too. EarthEra offers a new way for businesses and consumers to take immediate action to protect our environment. Through the EarthEra guarantee – that every dollar of investment goes directly into building new projects to create clean energy from the wind and the sun – we’re helping to build a brighter future for the next generation,” said Nate Hanson, vice president of Power Marketing for NextEra Energy Resources.

The Miss America Organization is one of the nation’s leading achievement programs and the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women.

The 2010 Miss America Pageant airs live on TLC this Saturday, January 30th at 8pm ET.
