Office Depot

Across the globe, Office Depot is committed to improving the environmental performance of its supply chain, buildings and internal workforce. Office Depot's initiatives have been widely acclaimed and are characterized by the Company's environmental vision: to increasingly buy green, be green and sell green. "In the last 4 years, we have made major investments to specifically reduce greenhouse gas emissions," says Yalmaz Siddiqui, Director of Environmental Strategy for Office Depot. "Our major programs include a stringent environmental paper purchasing policy; support for forests & biodiversity; energy usage enhancements in our stores, warehouses, data center and delivery vehicles; and strategic efforts in solid waste reduction and recycling. The EarthEra Renewable Energy Trust provides an exciting new opportunity for Office Depot, allowing us to help build clean energy facilities for the benefit of future generations."

Office Depot's primary greenhouse gas emissions arise from electricity use in stores and facilities as well as fuel for transportation. In 2009, the company made an EarthEra purchase of 15.5 million kilowatt-hours, avoiding over an estimated 11,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The EPA estimates that Office Depot's purchase is equivalent to avoiding the CO2 emissions of more than 1 million gallons of gasoline consumed.

"Office Depot is committed to reducing our carbon footprint and lending support to practical green initiatives," said Siddiqui. "Our participation in the EarthEra Renewable Energy Trust helps us do both, with confidence that 100% of our purchase will actually build more wind and solar power."
